New clinics ahead of World Diabetes Day

Ahead of World Diabetes Day that is marked on November 14, Dubai Health Authority will soon introduce smart clinics for its diabetic patients. Dr Fatheya Al Awadi, Consultant Endocrinologist and Head of Endocrine Department, Dubai Hospital, said that the new clinics will significantly improve the convenience of services for diabetics.

“This innovative approach will utilise the latest technology for blood glucose monitoring. Patients can also download DHA’s mobile applications and our electronic patient record system, SALAMA, will be used to optimise diabetes care and minimise the need for hospital admissions for those with high blood glucose levels.

Dr Al Awadi said, “In recognition of the multiple health conditions that many patients with diabetes encounter throughout their life, DHA has established multidisciplinary diabetes clinics for holistic diabetes management that provide comprehensive care to patients. The clinics help prevent as well as control diabetic comorbidities such as diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease), diabetes and retinopathy.”

The clinic provides specialised care for expectant mothers with diabetes, adolescents and has a multidisciplinary team of endocrinologist diabetes educators, nutritionists and psychologists, for cases where patients need mental support to cope with the ramifications of the disease.

The International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organisation (WHO) launched World Diabetes Day in 1991, in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by the condition. This year, the theme is: Diabetes concerns every family.
